Interested in getting involved in the prevention of gun violence via efforts on Columbia’s campus?
The Columbia SURGE Student Initiative is a growing group of Columbia students from across the university, working together to promote evidence-informed awareness and discussion regarding firearm injury prevention. Over the past few years, SURGE students have worked to organize several events around this issue, are taking classes in this field, and have been involved with ongoing research initiatives.

Gun Violence Action Week (GVAW) 2021
Thank you to speakers and attendees for participating in GVAW that was held October 25th - 29th
A Diverse Panel of Speakers Addressed:
Mental health and gun violence including stigmatization of those with mental health concerns and the rates of suicide in the United States by gun violence. This panel will touch on current trends and potential or current interventions used to curb gun violence
Trauma-informed practices in schools and how these can be applied towards mitigating the effects of gun violence and - possibly - contribute to gun violence prevention in schools. In discussing the importance of intervention at the school-level, a background on the impact of ACEs across an individual’s lifespan will be given
The talking points surrounding gun violence focus on policy and/or the police. This panel will address community-based perspectives on and interventions to effectively prevent gun violence
Speed-networking/professional development session; attendees will have the opportunity to connect and learn more about how they can get involved in gun violence prevention research/advocacy work, challenges of working in the field, and other questions they may have of our panel of experts
A “Stop the Bleed” Training was also provided in-person as part of GVAW 2021!
